It is a rare stone consisting of a black or brown matrix with natural inclusions of Calcite, Feldspar, Crandallite, Andalusite, or Celestite. These inclusions are usually white and prominent on a dark matrix, often resembling a Chrysanthemum flower. The matrix can consist of a mixture of Limestone, Dolomite, Porphyry, Clay and Gypsum. Chrysanthemum Stone formed over 290 million years ago with from organic-rich mud on sea floors, metamorphosed through heat and pressure.

These stones were found in China and Japan. More recent discoveries have been made in Canada and the United States. There is much ancient lore about this stone. Most of the myths and legends involve individuals and immortals falling in love and creating eternal everlasting bonds.
